Is Strength Training Safe for Young Athletes? Here's What Parents Should Know
If you're a parent of a young athlete, you've probably heard the myth: "Lifting weights will stunt my child's growth." It's one of the most common questions we hear from parents in Argyle and the surrounding North Texas communities — and it's worth setting the record straight.
Where the Myth Comes From
The idea that strength training is dangerous for kids traces back to outdated research and stories of poor form or unsupervised training. The truth, backed by decades of sports science, is very different: when youth strength training is properly coached, it's not only safe — it's one of the best things you can do for your child's long-term athletic development.
Why Age-Appropriate Strength Training Actually Helps

At Marion Fitness & Nutrition, our Junior (7–10), Varsity Prep (11–14), and Collegiate Prep (15–18) programs are built around the idea that training should evolve with your child's stage of development. Here's what that looks like in practice:
Better coordination and body control. Structured movement training helps young athletes understand how to move safely and efficiently, reducing the risk of injury during practices and games.
Stronger bones and joints. Contrary to the myth, appropriate resistance training supports healthy bone development rather than harming it.
Injury prevention. Athletes who build strength and stability early are statistically less likely to suffer common sports injuries later on.
Confidence that carries over. Mastering a new skill outdoors on the training field, whether it's a proper squat or a first pull-up, builds a sense of accomplishment that shows up on the field, in the classroom, and at home.
What Safe Coaching Looks Like

The difference between risk and benefit almost always comes down to coaching. At Marion Fitness Nutrition, every outdoor session is led by a certified coach who understands the physical and developmental needs of young athletes at each age. That means proper technique first, progressive loading over time, and a training environment that challenges kids without overwhelming them.
A Foundation for Life, Not Just for a Season
Our goal isn't just to help your athlete perform better this season, it's to give them a foundation of strength, discipline, and confidence that lasts well beyond their playing days. That's the difference between training and true athletic development.
